Meet Shawn Gates

I am a Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner based in the Hudson Valley, who serves all of New York State. I know with absolute certainty that life can change in an instant. As a nursing student in 2012, I was diagnosed with cancer and had to undergo six months of chemotherapy with radioactive seed implantation. I was deeply determined to continue and complete my training as a nurse so that I could care for others struggling with life’s most difficult challenges, while facing my own mortality. As a cancer survivor, I deeply understand how overwhelming, frightening, and isolating life’s most difficult challenges feel.

As a cancer survivor and wellness warrior some of the things I believe in:

  • Determination and resilience of the human spirit to overcome life’s most difficult challenges

  • The ability to choose inner strength, happiness, joy, faith, and the healing power of love over despair, fear and hopelessness

  • Integration of traditional psychiatric treatment, & medication management strategies, along with complementary holistic approaches

My personal and professional journey has shaped the way I care for others:

  • with deep compassion and empathy

  • with the emotional experience of facing my own mortality

  • with genuine empathy, warmth and expertise

  • helping others to discover happiness & joy despite being faced with difficult challenges

  • with an unwavering belief in the human capacity for healing, emotional growth, & self-love

  • with profound respect for all human lives grounded in autonomy and the right to self-determination

Today, I’m a nurse practitioner with an advanced degree that enables me to diagnose, treat and prescribe medication with the ability to deliver integrative psychotherapy to support those who are struggling with life’s most difficult challenges.

I provide professional evidence-based compassionate care to adults over the age of 18 years old across the lifespan for individuals who have been struggling with chronic illnesses, depression, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, sadness, grief, mood swings, painful memories, obsessive thoughts, insomnia, and ADHD.

I bring over 13 years of nursing experience with a trauma-informed approach while focusing on emotional, psychological, and culturally sensitive care that supports mind, body and spirit.

As part of my clinical training and work experience, I was fortunate enough to engage in high-acuity in-patient psychiatry, where I developed expertise in managing severe and complex mental health conditions, including mood disorders, depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, ADHD, and insomnia.

I bring my own lived experiences, my compassion, empathy, knowledge, & expertise to all patients that I am privileged to care for. This is your space to exhale, become empowered, and ignite your internal flame for healing, happiness, joy, growth and recovery.

I would be honored to become a part of your mental health journey. Let’s work together.
